Nontraumatic fracture of the thoracic spine in ankylosing spondylitis.

چکیده
SSEOUS BRIDGING beneath the anterior 0 spinal ligament is a feature of ankylosing spondylitis ( A S ) . When extensive this is usually associated with ankylosis of the apophyseal joints, resulting in a poker spine, or virtually complete fusion of the bony structures In 2 such cases, rupture or fracture of a calcified anterior thoracic ligament occurred following automobile accidents.l In each instance the involved interspace opened anteriorly without anterior-posterior displacement of the vertebrae. The present report of a thoracic interspace fracture in a rigid spine involved by AS is singular in that displacement of adjacent vertebral bodies occurred. More remarkable, no history of external trauma was obtained.

A 66-year-old man with a history of ankylosing spondylitis presented to the emergency department as a trauma activation after a fall backward onto his sacrum from the bottom rung of a ladder. He initially complained of neck pain. On physical examination, midline lower cervical spine tenderness to palpation was present, but careful neurologic examination revealed no deficits. A CT scan of the ce...

STUDY DESIGN A retrospective cohort. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to characterize spinal fractures in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Patients with ankylosing spondylitis are susceptible to fractures of the spinal column, even from minor trauma. However, the literature describing patients with ankylosing spondylitis and spinal fractures consists large...
متن کاملDelayed Traumatic Diaphragm Hernia after Thoracolumbar Fracture in a Patient with Ankylosing Spondylitis
Traumatic diaphragm hernia can occur in rare cases and generally accompanies thoracic or abdominal injuries. When suffering from ankylosing spondylitis, a small force can develop into vertebral fracture and an adjacent structural injury, and lead to diaphragm hernia without accompanying concomitant thoracoabdominal injury. A high level of suspicion may be a most reliable diagnostic tool in the ...
متن کاملSurgical outcome after spinal fractures in patients with ankylosing spondylitis
BACKGROUND Ankylosing spondylitis is a rheumatic disease in which spinal and sacroiliac joints are mainly affected. There is a gradual bone formation in the spinal ligaments and ankylosis of the spinal diarthroses which lead to stiffness of the spine. The diffuse paraspinal ossification and inflammatory osteitis of advanced Ankylosing spondylitis creates a fused, brittle spine that is susceptibl...

The objective of this article is to report a case of a patient with ankylosing spondylitis who sustained a fracture through a prior solid arthrodesis without loosening or changing posterior instrumentation. There have been few cases reported of a patient with ankylosing spondylitis suffering a fracture through a prior instrumented arthrodesis. None have noted the instrumentation remaining intac...
